[Review] Kiehl's Lip Balm #1 - Mint

Almost all of my friends own at least a tube of Kiehl's lip balm, and everyone's heard of them! There's been so much hype over this product - I've seen it featured in high profile magazines, TV shows and some celebrities swear by it. So I bought into the hype, and purchased their "mint" flavour.

In a word? It's overrated.

Product description
Temporarily protects and helps relieve chapped or cracked lips. Helps protect lips from the drying effects of wind and cold weather.

Prices
Kiehl's: $8.50 USD, without tax
eBay: $8-15 USD
Amazon: $7-13 USD
[This lip balm is sold in a variety of other places, including Nordstorm and Saks Fifth Avenue)

Packaging and ingredients
This product can be purchased in the 15mL tube (pictures of that shown below), and a 15mL tub. Some may say that the tube packaging is boring and dull, but I actually like it! It says what it needs to say, without any frills or dandy stuff.

As shown below, the active ingredients are 1% Octinoxate, which serves to protect your lips from the sun. 89.5% is petrolatum - it's another word for Petroleum jelly, which is... Vaseline.

There's a whole bunch of inactive ingredients, but I won't go into those details - they're shown in the pictures below~

The tube format is meant to be hygienic - I don't have to dip my fingers in any jars. However, the flatness of the tip, where the hole is, isn't easy to use. It's not easy to squeeze the tube and apply it directly on the lips. I have to get some on my finger and rub it myself; this takes away the "hygienic" idea of the tube packaging.

The product comes out fairly easily, and I've noticed that the consistency of the product can vary a lot. Even if it's just a tad, tad bit warmer, the lip balm will be extremely liquid-y (almost like water), and ooze out of the tube, getting itself all over me.

Using it

1 and 2. "Before" pictures of my chapped up, gross lips. (...and yes, that's a bit of blood right there. Ew, sorry~ ;n; )
3. Applied Kiehl's lip balm
4. After 4-5 applies, this is the outcome

My thoughts

After all the hype over this product and using it, I'm not convinced this is anything near "holy grail". This product works as well as a tub of plain 'ol vaseline - it works, but it ain't anything special. It's also a bit pricier than other lip balms. I don't think that it's worth such a price, because it's mostly just petroleum jelly. I can buy that stuff for cheaper in Walmart (or anywhere, really), and it'll have the same effects.

In my personal experience, I find that Blistex "Lip Medex" is way more effective than the Kiehl's lip balm. In just one use, there's a signifiant improvement to my chapped lips. Kiehl's, on the other hand, takes more applications to achieve almost-similar results. It (Kiehls) absorbs too quickly, and vanishes on my lips soon after applying... without leaving much of a positive difference.

Pros:
- It works, but you need to apply every so often
- A tube lasts a fairly long time
- Easy to find

Cons:
- Packaging isn't the best, nor hygienic
- Expensive (compared to other lip balms)
- Contains parabens
- Mostly just petroleum jelly, nothing special

Repurchase? No, I'm sticking to my trusty 'ol Blistex!

What about you?
Have you used this lip balm? What what your experience with it? Do you think the hype is well earned?

[Review] Laneige Multi Cleanser

Hey guys - I'll be reviewing Laneige's "Multi Cleanser" for this post!

I first tried this cleanser when I bought my first "Laneige Basic Care Set" box. It came in a deluxe sample size. I ended up using it every night to take off my makeup!

Description

"Mild and thorough cleansing for clear and bright skin"

Papain enzymes-based multi cleanser with 4 functions of:
- Removing makeup
- Removing sunscreen
- Exfoliating
- Cleansing

The tube comes in a 180ml size, and is described as suitable for all skin types. Its dermatologist tested, and is apparently non-comedogenic tested as well. The product lasts for 30 months unopened, and is good for 12 months after first use.

When squeezed out, the product is pretty thick, creamy and white. As you start massaging it into your skin, it foams up into this really foamy (heh) and bubbly texture. It feels creamy, but at the same time it feels lightweight. Hard to explain - but I like the feeling of this cleanser~

Price:

@ Amore Pacific stores (and Laneige stores): Approximately $30
@ eBay (Amore Pacific official dealer): $27 (but is currently on sale for $22!!)
@ Amazon: $28
@ Sasa: $32 (but is currently on sale for $23!!)

Laneige haul!~

Time for another haul!~

My recent Laneige shopping came in yesterday, and I'm happy to say that I'm happy about it! Most of the items aren't "first time" purchases, for me - in fact, they're staple in my everyday skincare routine.

Laneige is one of my absolute favourite Korean brands - I trust them everyday with my skin, and they've yet to fail me! When my skin is at its worst (ahem, when I burned off my face with Differin 0.3%...), Laneige's "Water Sleeping Pack_EX" was the only thing that helped.

Here's a list of the things I bought, along with a quickie review on the product's I've used before!

[Review] Atomy skin care products

I'm back with another review - this time, focusing on a number of the "Atomy" skincare products!

Atom美 (The last character is the "mi/y" part of "Atomy") is a South Korean company that makes skincare as well as health supplements. Their cosmetics claim to be made of 100% natural herbal ingredients using advanced technologies. It's a "members only" system, so you'd have to specifically buy it from an individual seller. Aka = harder to get than other Korean cosmetics.

Atomy cosmetics in a nutshell:

- High purification technology
- Korean medicine aging biotechnology
- Multiple nano-capsule technology
- Fresh organic herbal tea ingredients

The combination of these features and technologies (supported by the Korean Atomic Energy research institute and owned by different Korean companies) create the Atomy skincare line.

I know. A lot of science-y weird stuff.

I've watched their CEO, Park Han-gil, speak about his products in this youtube clip (for non-Korean speakers, there are English subtitles provided). There's a lot of boiling organic stuff, enrichment, vitamins, "excellent absorption", etc in these products. Yet despite all of this, Atomy was created on the belief that prestigious, quality goods can be sold and distributed at a low price.

All that aside, I'll tell you how this line worked on my skin.
TL;DR: It's horrible, and I wouldn't recommend it for people with sensitive or allergy prone skin.

[Review] The Face Shop "Real nature" face masks

Warning: Picture heavy post!

Face masks have worked quite well on my skin. They provide moisture and gentle skin care. So whenever I browse around Pacific mall (apparently the largest asian mall in North America hah), I always end up buying face masks. It's a no brainer for me - they're cheap, convenient and totally efficient!

The Face Shop opened in Pacific mall a couple of months ago. It's one of my favourite Korean makeup/skincare stores, so every time I visit, I'm always freakishly excited. If I have the money and justify the store sticker price, I end up bringing a couple eyeliners or small goodies home.

Even though I have an obsession with face masks, I never thought of buying face masks in that store. D'oh!

Then a couple of weeks ago, a friend in Korea mailed me a huge package. Inside were a bunch of goodies and I was so happy to find a bunch of face masks from TFS! I think there were 10 of them in there? And since the packaging was so pretty, I ran out that same day to P-mall and got myself more TFS masks.

Packaging: 5/5
Love the packaging design - it's simple and gets to the point. (It's also the reason why this post is so darn picture heavy. I love it.) There's also enough english for non-Korean readers to understand. Plus... picture demos! Gotta love them picture demos!

What it claims
Because I have several different "flavours" of this mask, I just thought I'd take pictures of the packaging so you can see yourself. I personally find that better than reading a whole block of boring text.
I also like pictures and pretty colours, so yeah.

In order, the pictures will show:
1. TFS pomegranate mask
2. TFS raspberry mask
3. TFS pumpkin mask
4. TFS mung bean mask
5. TFS olive mask
6. TFS aloe vera mask
7. TFS ginseng mask
[Not shown: TFS cucumber mask]
